Kinetic Racing compete in Touring Car Endurance Series

Mike Nash of Kinetic Racing explains:
A specific issue which Kinetic Racing and every other endurance team suffers from is ‘wheel pickup.’
This occurs when the discarded tyre rubber is driven over. The hot, sticky rubber can then find itself stuck to the inside of the wheel rims (barrels) see pics.
As can be seen in the photo above, the size of the discarded rubber can be up to fist size.
The consequence is that the wheel will be out of balance for the remainder of the stint (up to two hours), this will cause vibration to travel along the drive train and cause un-necessary wear on
hubs,
bearings,
drive shafts
and all the way in to the gearbox.
During the pit stop all four wheels are changed, fully cleaned and re-tyred ready for the next stint
The benefits of avoiding pickup are multiple:
Prevent un-necessary wear and tear on drivetrain
Maintain balance of wheel
Allow pit crew to focus on other tasks than cleaning wheels
Driver comfort massively improved due to harmonious vehicle
